Western Screech Owl

I carved this drawing into the parking lot of Woodhaven Nature Conservancy Regional Park for the July 17 event, part of the Woodhaven EcoArt Project.

This drawing is of a western screech owl, a species whose British Columbia subspecies is endangered and which makes the park one of its few homes. The drawing and the process it is currently following will reflect what has happened to the owl: human traffic, both on foot and by car, will slowly wipe out the drawing, much like human activities such as urban development have been slowly reducing the owl population.

This set shows the progress of the drawing after its completion. The main image was taken by the event's photographer, Margo Yacheshyn, right after I finished it. The others were taken by me, 4 and 24 hours after I finished it.

I used a grid to transfer the following sketch onto the parking lot. It look over six hours total of very hard, physical work to create this piece.
